How to choose a MTB dropper seatpost

A dropper seatpost lets you change the saddle height during your ride. Lowering it gives you more room to move on descents; raising it restores your pedalling height. It is also referred to in searches as a dropper saddle or telescopic saddle, but the component you need to choose is the seatpost.

For XC, trail and enduro, start with your bike's measurements and your riding position. More travel provides more room on technical sections, provided the frame can accommodate the seatpost and the height at full extension is correct.

  • Diameter: must match the diameter required by the frame. Models are available in 30.9, 31.6 and 34.9 mm: check the measurement on your current component or in your bike's manual.
  • Travel and length: check the travel, overall length and how far the seatpost can be inserted into the frame. Always observe the manufacturer's minimum insertion requirement.
  • Remote routing: an internally routed cable model requires a compatible frame. Also check the space available around the handlebar.
  • Saddle and materials: check that the clamp is compatible with the saddle rails. Assess materials, weight and maintenance in each model's specifications.

Cable-operated or wireless remote: what changes

Cable-operated models connect the remote to the seatpost via a cable housing. The RockShox Reverb AXS with remote and battery uses a wireless remote instead: consider charging requirements too. The control system and internal operation are separate aspects.

The catalogue also includes Fox, such as the Transfer Factory Kashima with I-Spec EV Remote, alongside Syncros, Switch, TranzX, XON, KS and CrankBrothers. Always check what each package includes and whether the dropper seatpost remotes are compatible with the handlebar mounts.

On an e-MTB, the motor brand alone does not determine compatibility: diameter, space inside the frame and remote routing matter. Evolution Bikes is a family-run shop near Caserta, established in 1974, with three generations of experience, a workshop and a bike fitting service. Frequently asked questions

How do I know which dropper seatpost diameter I need?

Check the diameter marked on your current seatpost or in the frame manual. The 30.9, 31.6 and 34.9 mm sizes are not directly interchangeable.

How do I choose dropper seatpost travel?

Start with your pedalling height and the space available inside the frame. Check that the model can be inserted correctly and that it does not raise the saddle too high when fully extended.

What is the best dropper seatpost for XC?

It depends on your riding position, frame and routes. For XC, consider weight, usable travel and ease of maintenance, rather than choosing on weight alone.

What is the difference between the RockShox Reverb AXS and a cable-operated model?

The Reverb AXS receives the remote's signal wirelessly and requires a charged battery. A cable-operated model uses a mechanical connection between the remote and seatpost instead.

Can I fit a dropper seatpost to my e-MTB?

Yes, if the diameter, length and control system are compatible with the frame. Check the insertion space and any internal obstructions caused by the battery, motor and wiring.

Is the handlebar remote always included?

It depends on the product: check the included equipment on your chosen model's product page. Also check whether the remote uses a dedicated clamp or a mount compatible with the brake lever.
