How much does weight matter when choosing a road bike?
Updated on 5 November 2026. The recommended products are available at the time of this update.
Weight matters when choosing a road bike, especially on long climbs, but on its own it does not tell you which bike is best for you. To compare two models, you need to know their size, specification and weighing conditions: on fast routes or long rides, aerodynamics and comfort can be worth more than saving a few hundred grams.
When low weight makes a difference
When climbing, you have to move the combined weight of the bike, rider and equipment uphill. A lighter bike reduces this effort, but the benefit needs to be considered against the total weight.
A simple example: removing 500 grams from a combined bike and rider weight of 80 kg means reducing its mass by around 0.6%. This does not automatically translate into the same improvement in ride time.
- Long, steep climbs: low weight deserves more attention, alongside gearing suited to your legs.
- Flat roads and fast riding: air resistance and a position you can maintain matter a great deal.
- Long rides and uneven roads: geometry, tyres and bike setup can affect comfort more than a few hundred grams.
How to compare weights without confusing the figures
The weight of a frame alone cannot be compared with that of a complete bike. Even two bikes with the same name can differ in size, groupset, wheels and tyres.
- Size: ask which size the figure refers to. Do not choose an unsuitable size to save weight.
- Exact version: check the model year, groupset and actual build.
- Wheels and tyres: check the model, width and whether inner tubes or tubeless sealant are fitted.
- Accessories included: pedals, bottle cages, bike computer mount and tools must be specified.
- Method: distinguish the stated figure from a measured weight of the bike you will buy, ideally using the same scales for the comparison.
- Tolerances: retain any percentage tolerances, without turning an approximate figure into an exact value.
Among the available specifications, the Scott Addict RC 10 lists 7.1 kg and the Scott Addict RC 30 lists 7.6 kg. The stated difference is 500 grams, but the builds also differ: Ultegra Di2 on the RC 10 and 105 Di2 on the RC 30. Size and weighing conditions are missing, so this is not a direct comparison between two equivalent bikes.
The Wilier Rapida with 105 Di2 and Miche Asfalto 45 Carbon, meanwhile, lists 8.2 kg ±5%. The Guerciotti Veloce S states 1.070 grams for the frame alone: that figure cannot be used to calculate the weight of the complete bike.
Bottecchia Aerospace, Scultura Force and Guerciotti Brera: which weight should you look for?
Searches such as “bottecchia aerospace weight”, “merida scultura force weight” and “guerciotti vélo gravel brera grx400 10-speed weight” require the precise version to be identified. The data available here does not include a verifiable weight for these builds.
- Bottecchia Aerospace: the weight of an Emme 4 SLI cannot be attributed to the Aerospace, because it is a different model.
- Merida Scultura Force: data for a Scultura 105 Di2 or Rival Edition does not establish the weight of the Force version.
- Guerciotti Brera GRX400 10-speed: you need the specifications for the exact gravel bike. The weight of the Veloce S frame is not relevant to this comparison.
If you are comparing a gravel bike with a road bike, also start with the intended use and routes. The guide Gravel bikes: how to choose the right one helps you understand which differences to assess beyond weight.
How to choose
Start with the roads you actually ride and the position in which you pedal comfortably. You can explore these aspects in more detail in our guide to choosing a road bike.
- Do you mainly ride climbs? Compare the complete weight, but also check the chainrings and cassette. A sufficiently low gear helps you manage fatigue.
- Looking for speed on the flat? Consider an aerodynamic design and whether you can maintain the position. There is no universal speed above which an aero bike is always worthwhile.
- Do you ride for many hours? Prioritise size, geometry and contact points. A handlebar that is too far away can put you at more of a disadvantage than a few hundred extra grams.
- Do you often encounter damaged road surfaces? Check the tyres fitted, maximum tyre clearance and pressures suited to your weight and wheels.
- Do you have a set budget? Compare the complete specification and maintenance requirements. Carbon alone does not guarantee the lowest weight.
- Check the load limits: these are different from the bike's weight. Check whether they also include the rider and luggage.
Our recommendations, available now
Here are six options from our selection of road bikes. The weights shown are those listed in the specifications and should be checked for your chosen size and build.
Scott Addict RC 10
Worth considering if you are looking for race geometry with an Addict RC HMX frame and a Shimano Ultegra Di2 electronic groupset. The specifications list 7.1 kg and a Syncros Creston iC SL integrated carbon handlebar.
Scott Addict RC 30
An option for those looking for race geometry with a Shimano 105 Di2 electronic rear derailleur. The specifications list 7.6 kg, Syncros Capital 1.0 40 wheels and 700x30C Schwalbe ONE tyres.
Scott Addict 40 Road Bike
Suitable for riders who prefer a more comfortable position, with a higher stack and shorter reach than a race setup. It combines Shimano 105 Di2 and 700x34C tyres; the listed weight is 8.7 kg.
Wilier Rapida Shimano 105 Di2 - Miche Asfalto 45 Carbon
Worth considering if you are looking for Shimano 105 Di2 electronic shifting, Miche Asfalto 45 Carbon wheels and 700x32C Vittoria tyres. The claimed weight is 8.2 kg ±5% and tyre clearance allows widths up to 36 mm.
Guerciotti Veloce S Road Bike Limited Edition Black Gold
Suitable for riders who want to choose between Campagnolo Chorus 12s and Record 12s, with hydraulic disc brakes. The carbon frame has a claimed weight of 1.070 grams and the build includes QTC aluminium wheels: the frame figure does not represent the complete bike's weight.
Trek Madone SL 6 Gen 8 Road Bike
Worth considering for riders looking for Full System Foil aerodynamic profiles and Shimano 105 Di2 12-speed shifting. The Aeolus Elite 50 wheels have 50 mm carbon rims, while IsoFlow allows the saddle area to flex to absorb bumps in the road.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a good road bike weigh?
There is no ideal weight that suits everyone. Consider the figure alongside size, build, routes and comfort: the lightest bike is not automatically the most suitable.
Does half a kilo less make a difference on climbs?
It reduces the weight you carry uphill, but the effect depends on the combined weight of the bike, rider and equipment. Half a kilo cannot be translated into a fixed saving in seconds.
Is a lightweight bike or an aerodynamic bike better?
Low weight becomes more relevant on steep climbs; air resistance matters a great deal when riding fast on the flat. The choice also depends on the position you can maintain and the route.
Does a bike's claimed weight include pedals?
Do not take it for granted: check the conditions stated for that model. Also ask about the size, any accessories included and the tyre setup.
