MTB 29 tyres and other sizes: how to choose
The right tyre depends on the routes you ride and compatibility with your bike. To choose between cross country, trail and enduro MTB tyres, start with your current size and consider tread, compound and casing.
Our range includes brands such as Pirelli, Maxxis, Vittoria, Continental, Michelin and Schwalbe. Compare the features of each version: tyres in the same family can have different constructions and intended uses.
Size, width and compatibility
If you are looking for MTB 29x2.40 tyres, the first figure identifies the nominal wheel diameter, and the second the nominal width in inches. Also check the ETRTO size on the sidewall and the rim and frame manufacturers' guidance. Actual width can vary with the rim's internal width: check the available clearance in the fork too.
- Cross country: small tread blocks and lightweight casings help tyres roll efficiently on firm surfaces.
- Trail: look for a balance of grip, rolling efficiency and protection on mixed terrain.
- Enduro: pronounced tread blocks and robust casings help on steep, rocky sections, generally with greater weight.
- Mud: an open tread pattern helps clear mud from between the tread blocks.
Compound, casing and tubeless setup
A soft compound tends to favour grip, with possible trade-offs in wear and rolling efficiency. Casing reinforcements increase support and cut resistance. For e-MTB, check the intended use and load limits stated by the manufacturer.
Tubeless Ready tyres require compatible rims, tape, valves and tubeless sealant. For a tubed setup, choose compatible inner tubes. Adjust pressure according to weight, terrain and tyre and rim guidance.
Front and rear tyres
Some models are designed for a specific position: compare the Continental Kryptotal Front 29 x 2.40 with the Kryptotal Rear 29x2.40. Follow the indicated position and direction of rotation.
Evolution Bikes is a family-run shop near Caserta, established in 1974, with three generations of experience and a workshop: ask us in store or via chat for advice on choosing tyres for your MTB.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose 29-inch MTB tyres?
Check the rim diameter and ETRTO size, then choose a width compatible with the rim, frame and fork. Consider tread and casing according to terrain and use.
What does the size 29x2.40 mean?
It indicates the nominal wheel diameter and nominal tyre width in inches. Actual width also depends on the rim on which the tyre is fitted.
What is the difference between tubeless and tube-type MTB tyres?
A tubeless system holds air without an inner tube and uses a sealant that can seal small punctures. A Tubeless Ready tyre requires a compatible system with a suitable rim, tape and valve.
Which MTB tyres should I choose for enduro and which for XC?
Robust casings and pronounced tread blocks are generally useful for enduro. Cross country often prioritises low weight and rolling efficiency, while still matching the tread to the surface.
What pressure should I inflate MTB tyres to?
Pressure depends on total weight, width, casing, terrain and whether you use inner tubes or tubeless. Start with the manufacturers' guidance and respect the tyre and rim limits.
Can I use the same tyres front and rear?
Yes, if the model is designed for both positions. Some tyres have a tread specifically for the front or rear: check the manufacturer's guidance and direction of rotation.
