Which lubricant to choose and how to lubricate your chain
Updated on 5 November 2026. The recommended products are available at the time of the update.
Choose a dry lubricant for your bike chain if you mainly ride in dry, dusty conditions, or a wet lubricant for rain and mud. Clean and dry the chain first, then apply a small amount to the rollers and wipe off the excess from the outside, following the instructions and drying times for your chosen formula.
How to choose
The terrain you encounter and the weather on your rides matter most. The word “ceramic” alone does not tell you whether a product is suitable for dry or wet conditions: always check its stated use.
- Dry, dusty conditions: a dry lubricant generally leaves a less sticky surface and reduces the amount of dirt retained. After rain or washing, check whether it needs reapplying.
- Rain and damp conditions: choose a wet formula that resists washing off. Its longer-lasting nature means you need to take care with cleaning and removing excess lubricant, which can trap dust.
- Mud: look for a product specifically recommended for muddy conditions. No lubricant removes the need to clean after a very dirty ride.
- Varying routes and weather: a formula stated to suit all conditions can be practical. Still assess the condition of your chain after your rides.
- Wax: this is an option for anyone seeking a less oily chain, but it requires careful preparation and adherence to drying times. Liquid waxes and hot waxes have different application procedures.
- Application: a dropper makes it easier to control the amount applied to each roller. A spray requires more care to avoid overspray and brake contamination.
For an e-bike, also consider the stated use and resistance to loads, while still taking the weather into account. If you are also choosing a bike, you will find more criteria in the guide E-bike: how to choose the right electric bike.
Before lubricating: clean and dry
Adding oil to a chain covered in sand and residue does not solve the problem: dirt and lubricant can form an abrasive paste. Clean the sprockets, chainrings and derailleur jockey wheels too if they have caked-on dirt, otherwise they will immediately make the chain dirty again.
- Place the bike in a stable position. On an e-bike, switch off the assistance before carrying out maintenance.
- Remove surface dirt with a cloth and a suitable brush.
- If the chain is very dirty, use a dedicated cleaner, following its instructions. Avoid high-pressure jets.
- Remove cleaner residue according to the product instructions and dry the chain thoroughly.
- If switching from oil to wax, follow the preparation required by the new formula: complete degreasing may be necessary.
Keep cleaners and lubricants away from brake discs, brake pads and braking surfaces. Work in a ventilated area and follow the instructions on the packaging.
How to apply lubricant and remove the excess
The product needs to reach the internal parts of the chain. A very oily outer surface does not mean better lubrication.
- Shake if required: some formulas need mixing before use.
- Apply to the rollers: using a dropper bottle, apply a small drop to each roller on the inner side of the lower section of the chain. Avoid repeated applications unless necessary.
- Distribute: move the chain slowly by hand, keeping your fingers away from the chainrings and sprockets. Do not use the e-bike motor.
- Allow to penetrate or dry: follow the time specified by the manufacturer. Wax formulas may require several hours.
- Remove the excess: for oils, wipe the outer surfaces with a clean cloth after allowing time for penetration. For waxes, follow the specific procedure without removing the freshly applied product.
When using a spray, protect nearby components and apply it in a controlled manner, observing the distance stated on the packaging. There is no need to spray the entire drivetrain to lubricate the chain.
When to lubricate again
There is no single interval that suits everyone. Rain, mud, dust, washing and ride duration affect how often lubrication is needed.
- Check the chain after a wet or muddy ride and after washing.
- If it looks dry or becomes noisy, check its cleanliness and lubrication before adding more product.
- If a black, sticky crust forms, clean it rather than continuing to add oil.
- If noise or difficult shifting persists, have the drivetrain checked for wear and adjustment.
The distances stated on packaging are guidelines, not guaranteed intervals. Lubricant reduces wear, but cannot restore an already worn chain.

Frequently asked questions
Is dry or wet chain lubricant better?
Dry lubricant is mainly suitable for dry, dusty conditions; wet lubricant for rain and mud. Choose according to your usual conditions and always check the stated use on the packaging.
How many kilometres should I ride between lubricating the chain?
There is no single distance that applies to everyone: it depends on the product, weather and dirt. Check the chain after rain, mud and washing, following the lubricant's instructions.
Should I clean the chain before applying oil?
Yes: remove dirt and residue, then dry thoroughly before applying the product. If the chain is encrusted with dirt, adding oil can increase the build-up of abrasive dirt.
Should excess oil be removed from the chain?
Yes: after allowing the oil to penetrate, wipe the outer surfaces with a clean cloth to reduce the amount of dirt retained. For waxes, follow the specific application procedure and drying times.
